Jodi Berger Cardoso, LCSW, Ph.D. EMDR Therapy

Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Jodi Berger Cardoso holds a PhD in social work and is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). As a bilingual (English/Spanish) social worker and activist, Jodi obtained her master’s degree in social work from Columbia University in 2004 and completed her PhD in social work at the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. In addition to her clinical practice, Jodi serves as a full-time professor at the University of Houston's Graduate College of Social Work. With over 20 years of experience, she has dedicated her career to conducting research, facilitating trauma therapy, and collaborating with clients and the community to promote wellness.

Jodi specializes in trauma therapy, working with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma and its aftermath. Symptoms of trauma often include anxiety, depression, grief, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. She is well-versed in treating complex posttraumatic stress disorder, mood and anxiety disorders, and grief/loss among her clients, and has extensive experience in assessment and diagnosis. Jodi has conducted mental health evaluations for immigrant and refugee children, adolescents, and adults seeking immigration relief.

In her therapeutic practice, Jodi adopts an anti-oppressive framework and believes that clients possess the inherent knowledge they need to heal and grow. She sees her role as a guide to help clients navigate through their pain so they can live their best lives. Jodi has received specialized training in EMDR therapy, play therapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy. Additionally, she has a profound connection with supporting clients in processing normal bereavement and complex grief.

Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Jodi is a divorced single mother of two children, aged 13 and 7. Music is a significant part of her life, providing joy and stability. She enjoys various music genres and surprises many with her passion for punk rock and heavy metal. Outside the city, Jodi finds her happy place in the mountains, having recently hiked trails in Sedona, Banff, Red Rocks, and Glacier National Park. When not parenting, rocking out, or hiking, she enjoys spin classes at a local Houston studio, doing reformer Pilates, and exploring local art galleries.
